Since there is just a single piece of very early concept art available we shouldn't jump to conclusions anyway - have you seen some of the early concept art for what became the Asura?
Also, don't forget that ANet is getting rid of one of the most tired fantasy idiosyncrasies - dwarves - once and for all
|
Should have mentioned I was talking hypothetically there, oops
The lack of Dwarves was interesting move on Anet's part, but it has opened the way for less stereotypical races, which I guess somewhat refelects what early Guild Wars 1 was about: breaking away from the mould of a fantasy MMO.
I shan't miss Dwarves, though it would have been fun to see if female Dwarves had beards.

Tatile if Anet put in dwarves as a playable character and put the beards on the femmes, people would have raged. Females: OMG WTF Y IS NOT MY FEMAEL DWARF ALL KYUTE AN LIEK HOT?! Males: WTF HOW AM I SPOSE TO BE TURNED ON BI PIXALS IF SHE HAZ A BEERD?!
So yeah. Female dwarves do have beards though, according to Tolkien and I think we should just listen to what he says. Then again since we don't have Hobbits in Guild Wars, I suppose Anet could make beardless dwarf women, who look like female hobbits do.

My Dwarf doesn't have a beard.
(Warning, nudity on some other pages. The above is the model used for my D&D Dwarf, converted to have a maul rather than axe )
Being influenced by another writer (like Tolkien, Lovecraft or Gaiman) is alright, but you can't let them dominate what goes into your story. So you can have beardless female Dwarves.
Though Anet's originality with Guild Wars does imply that there should be Tengu. Perhaps that large untouched area above the Luxon territories could be Tengutopia? Customisation could be an issue though. That is one of the problems with some types of anthro.

You do realise that Dwarves aren't in GW2 right?
They were all made extinct at the end of GW:EN

Now I'm looking forward for Diablo III, since I saw a bit of it and GW1 is not getting any real updates or changes lately.
Is updates what keep me in the game.

if you think diablo 3 is coming out any time soon you should go back and look at blizzard's track record on announcing a game, then checking when they actually release it.

In response to the Dwarf talk, I do recall the end of the snowman lair mission when Koris says "Bearded Dwarf Goddess". lol I never knew female dwarves had beards. But me, I'd prefer if they didn't. But since they aren't a race in Guild Wars 2 it doesn't really matter. I will point out that the female dwarves in WOW also don't have beards. But anyway, if dwarves were in GW2 I'd prefer them without beards but perhaps a choice between the two would be better. But as was said, they aren't in the game so it doesn't matter. I'm beginning to like the Tengu idea more and more.

I was thinking about the Tengu at work earlier while I was avioding talking to customers. The largest non-violent Tengu population we know about is in Cantha, correct? And these are all but wiped out in the 200 years since the end of Guild Wars 1.
What of the Tengu we've seen in Kryta and the Southern Shiverpeaks (different variantion of course)? I can't remember exactly what becomes of them, but it's possible that splinter groups become non-hostile in that period, thereby making them a viable playable race.
Any thoughts?

Diablo 3 is not vaporware. We have already seen a sort of gameplay demo. GW2 is, as of today, pure fiction to the best of anyone's knowledge.

WFT.
In addition, Starcraft 2 is likely to be released this fall, followed by Diablo 3, hopefully sometime in summer of 2009. Not to mention games like Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, and others that will eat away a large segment of GW population.
Since ANET has failed to release campaigns every 6 months, and also failed at balancing/updating what's already there (like HOM, Ursan etc), it is understanding why people are pissed off with the state of the game (GW1).

I'm Superbly bored with Guildwars so I don't even think I'll be getting GW2, I mean the only fun thing in Guildwars now are the skill updates, especially when a skill becomes super good like ether renewal, or a skill becomes super bad like signet of judgement. I will be looking forward to D3 and SC2 as I still like to play diablo 2 and Starcraft.

I'm looking forward to many many things.
Higher level cap, at least 50 please.
Being able to jump, I hope we can double jump.
Swimming, underwater fighting with sharks has always been one of my goals.
Making all professions able to solo, this one is pretty simple actually.
Better balancing system, this one is nearly impossible.
Better crafting system.
Now the major question to ANet is, will we have a hair stylist/barber?

Um, yeah, a few. Firstly, I'm not convinced the Charr are non-hostile in GW2 either, and they're a playable race. There will probably have to be a fair bit of storyline plot-device wrangling to explain what on earth Charr would be doing in the same party as humans, which will be interesting considering their mutual hatred (which I assume is undimmed to this day). So it's not much of a stretch; that and when you consider the Angchu/Sensali split on how to deal with humans, it's also not much of a stretch that you could find some Tengu that don't hate humans.
The other races are a slightly different story; they never had anything to do with Charr from what I can tell, although I have my doubts they'd get on too well. I don't think they'd mind the Sylvari, though I suspect the lack of respect the Asura show for them (not that the Asura respect anyone) wouldn't go down well. As for the Norn? Well, the Norn never really paid attention to things like territory, and they just moved into the same region as the Avicara. Yep, I think I smell a fight there. But I digress.
I ... uh ... would also like to note that it isn't clear what happened in Cantha following the ascension of Usoku. The articles we've seen merely indicate that the Canthan empire drove out all non-humans, not exactly what happened when they tried that. We know the Tengu do not like being pushed around, but there isn't a chance they could have repulsed an army of such great strength when they didn't exactly kick the Canthan's asses prior to the Factions campaign. And it sounds like they weakened since.
Would that mean they would get wiped out? Not necessarily. They'd be beaten, yes, but the more pragmatic Angchu may have eventually swallowed their pride and fled (probably for Tyria). The Sensali would almost certainly have fought to the bitter end. On the other hand, some people have suggested (and it seems realistic enough) that there may still be remnants of one or both tribes in hiding somewhere - and quite possibly the same for the Naga.

I know a lot of kids play GW, but...
In LOTRO the Dwarves all have beards. When you create a Dwarf character it's just a dwarf, no male or female. And no one talks like that in LOTRO...
Actually I'm starting to rethink leaving LOTRO...lol
Anyway, no one has a conniption because of it in LOTRO, probably because people care more about the lore than how their pixels turn on other players.
My whole point was how what you said wouldn't happen, but after writing this I think I've just come to the conclusion that the LOTRO player base is simply different than the GW player base and you may be right....
